CISV evolved from a firm conviction that lasting peace is possible if individuals and groups can learn to live together as friends. For CISV, the key to making this vision a reality, was to start working with children and youth.
CISV provides a range of unique, educational group activities, which develop cross-cultural understanding in children and youth from around the world. By encouraging respect for cultural differences and the development of self-awareness, CISV empowers each participant to incorporate these values into their lives as they become global citizens and strive for a more peaceful world.CISV is a international volunteer organization and has no religious or political affliations. You will find CISV chapters in over 50 countries...

CISV STATEMENTS OF EDUCATIONAL PURPOSE

CISV’s purpose is to prepare individuals to become active and contributing members of a peaceful society. CISV endeavours to stimulate the lifelong development of amicable relationships, effective communication skills, cooperative abilities, and appropriate leadership towards a just and fair world. CISV volunteer programmes and activities are planned to promote personal, cultural, intercultural, and international learning. This enables individuals to develop awareness of, and positive attitudes towards others, and the skills and knowledge to live, work and play with them, irrespective of cultural background. Through participation, individuals come to better understand themselves and their own culture as well as others and their cultures. CISV offers opportunities for interested children, young people, adults and families to explore relevant themes through independent, short term, non - formal educational activities organized in international, national and local contexts. These may be in either residential or non - residential settings and are offered to qualified participants irrespective of gender, race, religion, ethnicity, political affiliation, socio - economic background, or distinction of any other kind.

LES PROGRAMMES DU CISV / CISV PROGRAMS

VILLAGE

Durée : 28 jours
Ages : 11 ans

   ---------------------------------------------------

The Village programme is a four week international camp unique to CISV. Delegations of two girls and two boys (age 11) and one Adult Delegate from 12 nations plus five Staff and six international Junior Counsellors (age 16 - 17) participate in a multi - language camp featuring a mix of educational, cultural and sport activities which emphasize cooperative, global or intercultural living.

INTERCHANGE

                ------------------------------------------------

The Interchange programm is a bilateral, family centered exchange between two international CISV Chapters for young people age 12 - 15 during the first phase of the programme. The usual delegation of five girls and five boys plus Adult Delegate(s) reciprocally hosts partners of the same age and sex with similar interests for two to four weeks. Group activities involving both delegations often feature a mini camp. Single sex Interchanges are possible.

SEMINAR CAMP

Durée : 3 semaines
Ages : 17-18 ans
Approximativement 30 participants + 5 staff internationaux

      -------------------------------------------------------------

Seminar Camps are three week programms conducted for approximately 30 international young people age 17 - 18 plus five Staff members. Topics on peace fostering activities, international relations and cooperative living are focal points of the programme, which is actively conducted by the participants.

SUMMER CAMP

                        ----------------------------------------

The International Summer Camp programm is a three week international camp for 36 teens (age 13, 14 or 15) in national delegations of 4 or 6 young people plus an Adult Delegate.

                               ----------------------------------------------------

International People's Project (IPP) is an activity based on one specific theme for people aged 19 and above with at least four delegations depending greatly on the nature of the project. It must be at least 14 days long and should not be longer than 23 days. It consists of a practical part, in which the participants work on a certain project in cooperation with a partner organisation. To complement the educational content of this practical part each delegation gathers information on how the chosen theme is dealt with in its own country. They prepare activities before the IPP and carry them out during the project as a way of demonstrating this information. There may also be seminars and activities organised by the partner organisation and/ or other experts. The rest of the group then has an opportunity to exchange opinions on this theme.

MOSAIC

MOSAIC is a programme that helps connect CISV ideas, principles, and methods with local communities. It helps CISV’s vision be spread through more people and groups, and brings new ideas and perspectives to CISV. Each project is a separate CISV experience that relates to a local need and interest and involves a different target group. Participants can include both CISVers and non-CISVers. It does not have to be in a camp setting, as with many CISV programmes, but can be designed according to the needs and abilities of the CISV chapter. In this way, we can focus on different themes or issues relevant to our participants’ daily lives, while having a unique CISV style experience. MOSAIC is a program that consists of projects with educational content, developed by local chapters worldwide. These projects empower individuals to be agents of change, reach out, and involve as many people as possible.

DISERSITE CULTURELLE / FRIENDSHIP

Branche Junior / Junior Branch

Participants are encouraged to be “self governing,” to be a link between different CISV programmes and to promote contacts with JBs in other countries and like minded organizations. ».

-----------------------------

CISV became a reality because of the vision of one person who worked tirelessly to make a difference in our world. Following World War II, Dr. Doris T. Allen, a University of Cincinnati psychologist, saw the devastation that resulted when nations engaged in war to settle disputes. She envisioned a new approach to working toward achieving peaceful solutions to worldwide problems. Dr. Allen believed that people must learn to feel and think in new ways and that the education for change should start before adolescence and continue into adulthood. According to Dr. Allen, “Peace is possible only as individuals and groups learn to live amicably with one another as friends.” Because of Doris Allen’s vision and inexhaustible efforts, she has seen CISV grow from the first international “Village” camp in 1951 to a worldwide organization that has reached over 125,000 participants, helping them learn to live and work together in peace and friendship.

LA CÔTE D'IVOIRE EN IMAGE

<img style="WIDTH: 149px; Its neighbours are, to the west, Liberia and Guinea, to the north, Mali and Burkina Faso, and to the east Ghana. The Côte d'Ivoire's geographic make-up is fairly simple. From a coastal lowland, including many fine beaches, the terrain gradually rises to a smooth forest plateau in the central region and then to upland savannas in the north. Rainfall is heavy, particularly in the low coastal region; the rainy season is from May to October.

History & People

The Côte d'Ivoire lies too far west to have been significant in the 17th and 18th century development of the Guinea coast gold, and slave trade. Although a French protectorate was established over the coastal zone in 1842, the interior remained free from European control until the very end of the century. The central political figure of the Côte d'Ivoire in modern times is Felix Houphouet-Boigny, an early leader of the post-WWII nationalist cause. Houphouet-Boigny became the country's president upon its independence from France in 1960 and remained in that position until his death in December of 1993. Along the way, the Côte d'Ivoire became a model of the prosperity that seemed available through the continuation of close cooperation with former colonial powers. In the 1980s the country's economy began to suffer, and today the Ivory Coast is struggling to maintain economic and political vitality.

That the national anthem of Côte d’Ivoire describes the country as a land of hope is indicative of the positive attitude of its people. Always friendly, always welcoming, the good nature of the Ivorians will be encountered throughout the nation.

Whether travelling for business or pleasure, Côte D’Ivoire offers a multitude of choices. From bustling city life to sun-drenched beaches, from nature trips to cultural performances — the Ivory Coast has it all. And all of it, in one form or another, is accessible as a day-trip from Abidjan, the country’s largest city.

Abidjan: Paris of West Africa

Often called the Paris of West Africa, Abidjan is a major hub of commerce. Built on the shore of a calm lagoon, the modern skyline of The Plateau — the business district — lies across the Charles de Gaulle Bridge. With its wide tree-lined boulevards, outdoor cafes, chic boutiques and gleaming skyscrapers, The Plateau is a favourite with business travellers. Novotel, Sofitel and the Hotel Tiama are popular places to stay. Across an arm of the lagoon in the Cocody district is the opulent Hotel Ivoire Intercontinental which features West Africa’s only indoor ice-skating rink. And further away in the Riviera district is the Golf Hotel, with its highly acclaimed 18 hole golf course. By day, The Plateau is a wonderful place to take a stroll, visiting the many shops and relaxing in one of the parks or at a sidewalk. At night, the focus of activity shifts to Treichville, where you will find lively nightclubs and the highly popular Maquis restaurants offering cheap food that encompasses everything from Lebanese specialities to authentic West African dishes. In the daytime, the Treichville Market is a haven for bargain hunters. In 1997 it burned to the ground, but many merchants have set up sidewalk stalls during construction of the New Market. If you have a few hours to spare, the National Museum features a large collection of masks, statues, ivory, pottery and bronze. And the bold architecture of St. Paul’s Cathedral is worth a visit, the bell tower providing a good view of the Plateau.

Yamoussoukro: A President’s Legacy

The road to Yamoussoukro — the capital — is a modern four-lane motorway that begins just north of Abidjan’s Adjane district. Be sure to stop at the Parc de Banco where you will see the famed Fanico laundrymen at work in the river. Over a hundred migrant workers labour there each morning. By noon, every square metre of grass flanking the road is covered with clothing and linen spread out to dry. Despite a high degree of illiteracy, there is seldom confusion with pick-ups and deliveries. Entering Yamoussoukro, you will immediately be impressed by the Notre Dame de la Paix basilica, its enormous dome towering above the horizon. Built at a cost of over US$400 million, it dominates the skyline and is the largest cathedral in Africa and the tallest church in the Christian world. Skilled artisans in France fashioned its 36 immense stained-glass windows. Yamoussoukro was home to the late president and is now a monument to his excesses. From a humble town of 30,000 the population has increased ten-fold. New architecture, modern street lamps and deserted eight-lane boulevards reflect a failed vision. Yet the city is not without its charm. It boasts two of the finest universities in West Africa and superior convention facilities that make it attractive for international conferences. The Hotel President is one of Côte D’Ivoire’s finest and features a top floor restaurant with quality European cuisine. A nearby golf course rivals the one in Abidjan. The former Presidential Palace is used by relatives and is off limits to visitors. But you can approach the estate on a small bridge across an artificial lake that is teeming with dozens of crocodiles. These are fed in late afternoon, providing a guaranteed close-up view of this feared reptile. If animals are your passion, only an hour’s drive from town is the d’Abokouamekro Game Reserve. The park is home to hippos, birds, including waterfowl and other indigenous wildlife. The featured attraction, however, is the herbivore population. An ingenious programme was undertaken to breed animals that have long disappeared. Who would guess that you can see White rhinos and giraffes in West Africa? Early results suggest the project is a resounding success. A small but dedicated platoon of wildlife officers ensure poaching does not become a problem.

The Elephant: A National Symbol

Once home to thousands of elephants, the Ivory Coast took its name from the centuries-old trade in elephant tusks. But the ban on ivory trade came too late to save the herds of West Africa. Today only a few hundred elephants survive in the north-east corner of the country in Comoe National Park, the country’s largest game reserve. Here, they freely wander the forests, grasslands and savannah of the southern Sahel.

Korhogo and the Senoufo People

Korhogo is the usual destination for visitors heading north. A worthwhile stopover on route is the village of Kong, where you will find the Lobi people who share a history with northern Ghana, Mali and Burkina Faso. Kong’s major landmark is a mosque dating from the 17th century and built from mud in traditional Sudanese style. It is one of the finer examples of such buildings and one of only a few this far south. The town of Katiola features a traditional pottery centre and the indigenous diamond mines at Tortiya. But beware — Tortiya lies at the end of a bone-jostling 50 kilometre dirt road. All mining is by hand and first-time visitors eagerly search for that special sparkle in the sun. The itinerant miners usually have a few stones for those with cash to spare. Korhogo is a pleasant community and features a small museum, a craft centre and a lively market. The area is home to the Senoufo people who are traditional farmers and hunters. Their craft skills are legendary as are the special dances they willingly perform for visitors. A village market in Waranienie displays all manner of fabrics and you can watch the weavers at work on their looms. Nearby is Fakaha, another village known for its Korhogo mud cloth. The cloth has a rough texture and sports intricately painted designs featuring animals, birds, insects and abstract patterns. As you visit these places, be on the lookout for masks. Senoufo masks, some of which are a metre or more in length, are renowned for their intricately carved animal heads. Masks are thought to be imbued with magical powers, with the wearers becoming the spirits they represent.

More informations: www.tourismeci.org

BUREAU CISV ABIDJAN

Bureau CISV Abidjan
CISV Abidjan Board Members
